As we get ready for a little break, we would like to take a moment to share our appreciation for the community that is CCC. We are so grateful for the connections that we make daily here, and for the connections that we keep with families who are beyond their time with us. Wishing everyone a wonderful and warm holiday, and a very happy New Year!

The recent New York Times Article Can Emotional Intelligence be Taught? highlights a topic near and dear to CCC's heart: social emotional learning and development. Here at CCC we believe that learning to function in a group, make friends, and meet personal needs through social relationships are fundamental life skills which support development of a positive self-concept and the confidence that goes with it, opening the way for a lifetime of exploration and growth in all areas of development. Our daily practice of helping children to explore and name their emotions as they develop their identity and empathy skills creates an honest and safe environment in which kids can be themselves - or, more accurately, continue to become themselves! - in the context of a caring group. To us, this is THE way to promote all learning, growth and development. We loved seeing our way of thinking reflected in this article, and we hope it is good food for thought for you, too!

As we search for answers and look to each other for support in this heartbreaking time, we thought a resource might be helpful. In this article, Talking With Kids About News, it is suggested that parents start with finding out what a kid knows when a news topic comes up. We at CCC feel that following a child's lead is as important as ever in times like this. While many of us wish that our children could be ever sheltered from all that is dark and dreadful in our world, sometimes hearing about these things is inevitable. Let us be prepared to carry our children through by listening openly, responding appropriately, and keeping them surrounded by light and love.

Let us care for one another too. If you or someone you know needs assistance, we can help. Our community is fortunate to have many high quality mental health resources available. Call Lisa or Kate at 860-456-7171, or email us at comm.childrens.ctr@snet.net.

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.' To this day, especially in times of 'disaster,' I remember my mother's words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers - so many caring people in this world." ~ Mr. Rogers

In the article, Scientific Inquiry Among the Preschool Set, Dr. Gopnik discusses a rationale for letting play lead the way: "If we want to have great scientists, letting preschoolers explore, play and do pretend play exercises the capacities for doing science." Check out the article for further exploration of these ideas!

The new Sunscreen and Bugspray Permission Form and the new Topical Medication Form are available for download on our forms page. Please make sure that if you are bringing bug spray and sunscreen, that each product has it's own page. We can no longer put both bugspray and sunscreen on the same form. We need detailed instructions written for each product. Also, if you wish your Nino to have diaper cream applied, you should fill out a new Topical Medication Form. Thank you for your patience as we improve our forms!

A new set of reccomendations have been released regarding sunscreens. Sunscreens now need to be broad spectrum, covering both UVA and UVB rays. Plus recently there have been some discoveries about the chemicals in sunscreens that we have been using. The EWG has just release a list of recommended sunscreens for this summer. If you would like to check the list, click the link to their Best Beach and Sport Sunscreens List. While you are on their site, you might also want to check out the Hall of Shame and Top Sun Saftey Tips for a happy summer. And you can also download their app (to take with you to the store when looking for sunscreens), EWG Sunscreen Buyer's Guide, to help you with sunscreen shopping in itunes for iphone, ipad and ipod touch.

First day of summer sessions! Please check our new and updated 2011 Nut Free Zone Policy and the checklist for summer sessions located on our forms page. And we also have a new bug spray and sunscreen permission form located on the forms page as well. Happy Summer!

May 26, 2011

Thank you to everyone who attended the Huggler Art Gallery Opening Night Gala! We had a great time and the Hugglers really enjoyed showing off their works of art to friends and family. We are working to gather quotes from the children about their feelings on the gallery and hopefully we can post some of them!

May 25, 2011

The Ninos are taking a field trip to Baker's Woods on June 1st. Any family that is interested in driving or coming, please sign up on the classroom door. We would gather at CCC around 9:30, and leave for the farm around 10. After we see the animals, we will have a picnic at the Mansfield Library. We will return to CCC by 12:30 for all kids that are going home at that time. If you have any questions, please see a Nino teacher. Thank you!

May 12, 2011

The Hugglers have been thinking a lot about the field trip we took to the gallery and would like to make their own art gallery here in the classroom. On Tuesday, May 24th, we will turn the Huggler room into our own art gallery open to our families. Each Huggler will decide which two works of their own art they would like to put on display for their family and friends to view. We invite all families to come and join us for our Huggler Gallery Opening Gala Night at 5:45. Pizza will be provided, donations greatly appreciated. And if you would like to bring a dish or drink to share with the other families, we would appreciate that too. Thanks so much and hope to see you there!

May 6, 2011

Thank you to all the Huggler families that helped to make our field trip a success. We had a wonderful time and were so pleased by the community support provided by ECSU. We have more big ideas in the works and will let you know as they develop!

We would like to open up our board metings to more people who find it difficult to get out of the house in the evenings.  We're going to try at our January meeting to invite up to 5 people to join us via Skype. Anyone who is interested can use this link to download the latest version from the Skype website. We will be testing this at our next board meeting on January 19th. If you wish to attend via Skype, please let us know before the meeting so we can have our computer set up to accomodate. Thanks and we look forward to testing this out!
